spell checking anyone?
Friday, July 25th, 2008 :: by jonvon
lazywebbing it here - someone at work needs a spell checker that works on the web. domino back end of course, to work with something like Tiny MCE or the like.

anyone know of anything off hand? we can buy, in fact they want us to buy rather than develop.

Um... not to be a smartass, but spell check is included automatically in Firefox and Safari. I know most companies still treat IE as their "official" browser, but it'd be a shame to buy a plugin to provide functionality that's free in other browsers.

Did you see this one a while back? I bookmarked it, but never had a reason to try it. Uses the spell checker in iNotes in a regular Domino app.

I don' t know if it's version-specific or not, but might be worth a look. Maybe not, since you wouldn't be developing it, but IBM surely wouldn't support it either.

At the time that I was looking into this, I found a few options by using "the Google." Some were commercial. Don't have links for those, though, and your Google-fu is at least as strong as mine...

I can spell. Where is the user located, and do they have an extra chair in their cube? I'll bring a whip and a taser. They'll learn.

I have to agree with Tim, though unlike him I have no reservations about being a smart ass from time to time. Some say it is my default state.

Spell Checking is inherently a client side activity and I strongly believe it should be handled by the browser or a browser plug in.

If you insist on staying with IE as a standard, there are add ons for it as well. A google search brought up several recommendations for this one:

I have used { Link } for a Domino solution, I picked it as it worked in both browsers, and supported FCKEditor and TinyMCE.

My customer now uses mozilla only so could just use the built in spellcheck, but this was a cool solution.

thanks a lot everyone. i think we're going with Turtle. he'll be our official spell checker. it was the whip and taser that won us over. ;-)

Still need this Jon? I wrote a TinyMCE Domino-based spell-checking plugin recently!

Contact me via codestore's email if you're interested.
