Couple say shipping company has held property hostage for thousands of dollars despite delays


SUGAR LAND, Texas –When the Bieltz family moved from Puerto Rico to Sugar Land, they figured the goods they had paid thousands of dollars to have shipped would be delivered in about two weeks. However, it was anything but timely.

“It was… $ 22,500,” John Bieltz said.

He and his wife Merrily say they are frustrated and confused.

“We paid a lump sum up front and thought it was to move our goods from point A to point B,” John said.

But the Bieltz family say about a month and a half after their goods were supposedly shipped by Transparent International, the company gave them an unwanted delivery instead.

“We get an invoice from them for $ 5,433 for storage, and they say, ‘You pay for this and we give you your goods,’” John said. “(The next day) we get another bill from them for $ 690.”

The couple said they reluctantly paid the bills, as well as the $ 45 it costs each time to make the wire transfers, but about a week later… “an additional $ 517.50 for three more days of storage.” John said.

Storage they didn’t ask for, costing over $ 170 per day, including administration fees charged by Transparent International. The couple said Transparent told them their belongings were stranded due to equipment and trucking issues at the port.

“They keep telling us that we don’t understand how international shipping works and we don’t understand how things work at the port,” John said.

KPRC 2 verified with the Port of Houston. Officials say they don’t have a record of storing the Bieltz’s container based on the information provided, but say they charge around $ 29 a day for the storage. Port of Houston officials say it’s possible the Bieltz’s goods could have been shipped through a private terminal, which charges its own rates, but the Bieltzes said despite numerous requests for a bill of lading, Transparent still has not. specified this information.

“I never had the opportunity to speak to anyone above the CEO, and we got no satisfaction,” John said.

The Bieltz family finally got their things back a few days before Christmas, but they said they still had no idea where it had been all this time and why they had to pay for issues they had not caused. We have contacted Transparent International on several occasions for answers and were told that someone will answer our questions, but we have not yet received an answer.
