The Great Eastern Shipping Company, with the support of the Chief Shipping Officer, India and Indian Registry of Shipping, has successfully completed India’s first trials of an MR tanker in international waters using a biofuel blend.
The B20M grade biofuel, a blend of 20% ISCC certified FAME biofuel and 80% VLSFO, was bunkered at Dubai anchorage in the United Arab Emirates by a German company UNIPER Energy and the trials were conducted in the international waters.
No difficulty was encountered during these tests.
Biofuel is fuel derived from renewable sources, in this case waste oils such as used cooking oil. Biofuels are considered carbon neutral because the carbon dioxide that is absorbed by the biomass source is equal to the carbon dioxide that is released when the fuel is burned, thus helping the fuel to gain more attention in the world .
Sustainable biofuels can be used as a marine “alternative fuel” to help reduce carbon emissions in shipping.
